NEVAFILM RESEARCH completed a report dedicated to the Russian film industry, compiled at the request of the European Audiovisual Observatory

In November 2009 NEVAFILM RESEARCH, the analytical division of Nevafilm, in collaboration with RFilms, completed a report dedicated to the Russian film industry, compiled at the request of the European Audiovisual Observatory.

 

The Report consists of three chapters, and includes a description of the institutional structure of Russian cinematography, a brief overview of cinematography in general, and analysis of different branches of the industry in Russia: film production for cinema and TV (producers and production companies), film production facilities (film studios and service companies), cinema exhibition, theatrical distribution and DVD distribution.

 

The study also touches on subjects specific to the Russian film industry not covered in previously published reports. They include:

  • the fundamentals of state policy governing Russian cinematography;
  • the activities of federal, regional and local authorities in cinematography;
  • regulatory acts governing cinematography activities;
  • the system of state support for cinematography;
  • the activities of civil organizations in cinematography;
  • the structure and market volume of film production for cinema and TV in 2006–2009, including markets for TV films and series, feature films, and animation pictures;
  • the structure and market volume of film production facilities in 2006–2009, including film studios and service companies;
  • the Russian market for film production services, and projects for construction of new film studios;
  • the modern cinema exhibition market in Russia in 2004–2009 (cinema sites and theatres in retail and entertainment complexes, multiplexes, digital cinema screens, IMAX theatres and SimEx 4D);
  • the modern theatrical distribution system in Russia, and market volumes of film distribution in 2004–2009;
  • distribution of Russian films in Europe;
  • the market for licensed video in Russia, and market volumes of DVD distribution in 2008–2009;
  • principal players in Russian film production for cinema and TV, film production facilities, cinema exhibition, and film and video distribution.

A printed, Russian-language version of the Report will be presented to Russian cinema professionals during a workshop entitled The Russian Film Industry in its European Context, which will take place on 1 December 2009 as part of the 80th International Film Market, at the Hotel Cosmos, Moscow (Galactica Hall, 2nd floor, 14.00–16.00). Among the honorary guests who will participate in the workshop: Vladimir Gregoriev, Executive Counsellor, Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communication of the RF; Wolfgang Closs, Executive Director, European Audiovisual Observatory; and Alexander Golutva, Deputy Minister of Culture of the RF.

 

The event will welcome representatives of the largest cinematography enterprises (film producers, film and video distributors and cinema network directors), as well as representatives of professional cinema publications, and the Russian press.

 

Upon completion of the workshop, all guests will receive a printed, Russian-language copy of the Report “The Film Industry in the Federation of Russia”.
